Time in Hands

서울시 종로구 소격동에서 자리한 CN갤러리에서 열린 전시 조준연·송성원 《Time in Hands》입니다. Time in Hands조준연·송성원염색을 전공한 송성원은 부여에서 활동하며 꽃, 나뭇가지, 풀, 섬유 등 다양한 자연물을 염색의 대상이자 공예의 재료로 다룬다. 그는 염색을 단순한 기술이 아닌 자연의 생명성과 기억을 담아내는 작업으로 확장한다. 자연물 고유의 형태와 색을 존중하는 태도를 바탕으로, 재료에 깃든 시간과 흔적을 감각적으로 드러내며 관객에게 자연을 새로운 시각으로 경험하게 한다. 송성원의 작품은 자연과 인간의 관계를 감각적 교류의 장으로 확장시키며, 자연의 흔적을 기록하고 다시 불러내는 과정을 통해 공예의 새로운 가능성을 보여준다.공예디자인을 전공한 조준연은 세종을 기반으로 활동하며 저서 슬로우 크래프트(Slow Craft)에서 제안한 개념을 실천적으로 확장한다. 그는 자연의 본래 모습과 물성을 존중하며 최소한의 가공과 개입으로 사물의 새로운 가능성을 탐구한다. ‘슬로우 크래프트’는 손의 창조성을 바탕으로 스스로 만든 사물을 오래 사용하는 삶의 방식을 모색하는 철학이다. 이번 전시에서 조준연은 닥나무 껍질의 질감과 형태를 살린 조명 작업을 비롯해 다양한 개인 작업과 협업 작품을 선보이며, 슬로우 크래프트가 단순한 제작 방식이 아닌 지속 가능한 생활문화임을 보여준다.특히 이번 전시에서는 두 작가가 닥나무 껍질이라는 공통된 재료를 각자의 방식으로 해석한 작품을 함께 선보인다. 같은 재료가 서로 다른 조형적 접근을 통해 새로운 형태와 쓰임으로 확장되는 과정은 자연의 물성과 손의 창조성이 지닌 다양한 가능성을 드러낸다. 《Time in Hands》는 이를 통해 사물과 자연, 인간의 관계를 새롭게 바라보는 계기를 마련한다.Song Sung Won, who majored in dyeing, is based in Buyeo, where he works with a wide range of natural materials, including flowers, branches, grasses, and fibers, treating them both as subjects for dyeing and as materials for craft. He expands dyeing beyond a mere technique into a practice that captures the vitality and memories of nature. Guided by a respect for the inherent forms and colors of natural materials, he sensuously reveals the traces of time embedded within them, inviting viewers to experience nature from a new perspective. His work broadens the relationship between nature and humanity into a space of sensory exchange, demonstrating new possibilities for craft through the process of recording and reawakening the traces of nature.Jo Joon Yeon, who majored in craft design, is based in Sejong and continues to develop in practice the concepts proposed in his book, . Respecting the original forms and material properties of nature, he explores new possibilities for objects through minimal processing and intervention. Slow craft is a philosophy that seeks a way of life grounded in the creative potential of the hand, encouraging people to use the objects they make themselves for a long time. In this exhibition, Jo presents a range of individual works and collaborative pieces, including lighting works that highlight the texture and form of mulberry bark. Through these works, he demonstrates that slow craft is not merely a method of making, but a sustainable culture of living.In particular, this exhibition brings together works in which the two artists interpret the same material, mulberry bark, in their own distinct ways. The process through which a shared material takes on new forms and functions through different approaches to artistic expression reveals the diverse possibilities inherent in the material qualities of nature and the creative potential of the hand.
